RCBO Upgrade

An RCBO (residual current circuit breaker with overload protection) combines the functions of a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) and a residual current device (RCD) in a single module. Upgrading individual circuits within a consumer unit to RCBOs means each circuit has its own independent fault and overload protection, reducing the likelihood that a fault on one circuit will interrupt others.

Shared upstream protection can still disconnect more than one circuit. In a consumer unit fitted with a split-load design, a single RCD protects a group of circuits.

If that RCD trips, all the circuits it covers lose power simultaneously. An RCBO-equipped board avoids this by giving each circuit independent protection, which reduces disruption and makes it easier to identify which circuit has developed a fault.

RCBO upgrades are commonly carried out when a property experiences nuisance tripping that affects multiple circuits at once, when a new circuit with a higher likelihood of earth faults is added such as an outdoor supply or EV charger, or when a householder wants to future-proof their installation before adding further electrical loads. An engineer will assess the existing consumer unit to establish whether it is compatible with RCBOs of the appropriate specification and type, and will carry out testing after installation to confirm the circuit and its protective devices are correctly installed and operating.

Notification depends on the scope and location: a new circuit, replacement consumer unit or qualifying work in a special location may be notifiable in England. Changing an existing protective device does not by itself mean the work is notifiable.

An engineer can advise on the specific requirements for your installation before work begins.

Signs an RCBO upgrade may be worth considering

⚠️

Multiple circuits losing power together when one trips

If a single RCD trip cuts power to several circuits at once, the installation uses a grouped RCD design. Identifying which circuit caused the trip can be time-consuming, and individual RCBO protection on each circuit can reduce disruption to other circuits, although shared upstream protection can still operate.

⚠️

Nuisance tripping on circuits supplying outdoor equipment

Circuits supplying garden sockets, outbuildings or outdoor lighting are more exposed to moisture and physical disturbance, which can cause RCD trips. Individual RCBO protection on these circuits can reduce disruption to the other circuits. A fault still needs investigation; changing protection does not repair it.

⚠️

New high-demand circuits being planned

Adding circuits for EV chargers, electric showers or heat pump equipment often warrants individual RCBO protection from the outset. These loads can introduce earth fault current characteristics that benefit from dedicated protection rather than sharing an RCD with other circuits.

What to expect from an RCBO upgrade

1

Consumer unit compatibility check

An engineer will inspect the existing consumer unit to confirm it can accommodate RCBOs of the appropriate specification for each circuit, checking bus bar design, available space and the current breaker types already fitted.

2

Circuit identification and load assessment

Each circuit served by the consumer unit is identified and its characteristics are noted. This informs the selection of the correct RCBO type and current capacity for each position.

3

RCBO installation and functional testing

The electrician safely isolates the supply before installing compatible RCBOs. The circuit is then inspected and tested, including the required residual-current protective-device tests, before being returned to service.

4

Certification and documentation

The engineer will issue the appropriate certification on completion. If the scope of work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, an Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Regulations compliance documentation are provided.

FAQs About RCBO Upgrade

What does an RCBO do that a standard MCB does not?
A standard MCB protects against overcurrent and short circuits. An RCBO does this and also detects residual current faults, disconnecting the circuit quickly if current is flowing to earth, for example through contact with a live conductor. A standalone RCD in a split-load board protects a group of circuits together; an RCBO on each individual circuit provides equivalent protection independently, circuit by circuit.
Will upgrading to RCBOs prevent all electrical faults?
RCBOs protect against overload, short circuit and earth fault current on the individual circuits they serve. They do not protect against arc faults or every possible failure mode. Regular electrical installation condition assessments remain important regardless of the protection devices fitted in the consumer unit.
Can RCBOs be fitted to any consumer unit?
Not all consumer units are compatible with every RCBO. The internal bus bar design and available space within the unit must suit the RCBO modules. An engineer will assess compatibility before any work is carried out, and will confirm which RCBO types are appropriate for your existing unit.
Is an RCBO upgrade notifiable under Building Regulations?
Notification depends on the scope and location of the work. In England, a new circuit, replacement consumer unit or qualifying work in a special location is notifiable. Replacing an existing protective device does not by itself make the work notifiable. Ask the electrician to confirm the route before work starts and provide the appropriate certification on completion.
How can I tell whether my existing board uses grouped RCDs or individual RCBOs?
An electrician can identify this quickly during an assessment. As a general guide, if your consumer unit has separate RCD modules covering groups of breakers, rather than a single combined device on each individual circuit position, it uses a grouped design. This means a single trip can cut power to several circuits at once.
What preparation is needed before an RCBO upgrade?
Note down any circuits that have been tripping frequently and any appliances or equipment connected to those circuits. Ensure the engineer has clear, safe access to the consumer unit. It is helpful to have details of any previous work carried out on the board or individual circuits, as this may be relevant to the assessment.
